What Is Cloudflare? DNS, CDN & Proxy Explained

Cloudflare sits in front of millions of websites, helping them load faster, stay online, and protect themselves from attacks.

What Cloudflare Does

Imagine you have built an online photo gallery where people can upload and share pictures. You rent a small server from a cloud provider, install your application, and purchase the domain myphotos.com. At first, everything works perfectly with a few friends visiting daily.

But then your website becomes popular. Thousands of people start visiting from Germany, the United States, Japan, and Australia. Three problems emerge:

  1. All visitors must communicate with the same server. The farther away they are, the longer it takes to load your website.
  2. Everyone on the internet can communicate directly with your server, including attackers.
  3. Every photo is downloaded directly from your server. As traffic grows, your server has to do more and more work.

Cloudflare sits in front of millions of websites to solve these problems. It helps them load faster, stay online, and protect themselves from attacks.

The Three Core Services

Cloudflare solves these problems using several services. The three most important ones are DNS, a CDN, and proxying.

DNS

Every computer on the internet has an IP address, but people remember names like myphotos.com. When someone types myphotos.com into their browser, their computer must figure out where the website is located. This process is called DNS resolution. Cloudflare can manage your DNS records and tell visitors where your website lives.

CDN (Content Delivery Network)

Remember all those photos people were downloading directly from your server? Cloudflare has servers all around the world. Instead of every visitor downloading the same photos from your single server, Cloudflare can temporarily store copies closer to users. The next visitor downloads those files from a nearby Cloudflare location instead of your server. This reduces the work your server has to do and makes the website feel much faster.

Proxying

Instead of visitors connecting directly to your server, they first connect to Cloudflare. Cloudflare then forwards the request to your server if necessary. The flow is: visitor → Cloudflare → your server. Because every request passes through Cloudflare, it can hide your server's real IP address, filter malicious traffic, cache files, and provide many other features.
